Ramayana and Mahabharata are the most noble Puranas in Hinduism. It is the place where in the Ramayana, Ramapiran went to Sri Lanka to kill Ravana, rescue Sita, and worshiped Shiva Lingam in Rameswaram to get rid of its sins, which is now being worshiped as Rameswaram Ramanathar Swami Temple.
This temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingams and one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. It is said that bathing in the Ganges and worshiping Kashi Viswanadha in Kashi, located in North India, will lead to salvation. In that way, the Agni Theertha in Rameswaram located in the south and the 22 Theerthas located in the temple are believed to offer moksha by worshiping Ramanatha Swamy.
It is said that there are 22 Theerthas inside the temple and 22 Theerthas outside. There are 22 Theerthas located in the temple as wells. The 22 Theerthas that can be found outside are said to be situated in the sea called Agni Theertha, opposite the temple.
