A major incident was declared after an “explosion” at a block of flats in Bedford in which at least one person is known to have died.
Footage captured by onlookers shows the blaze tearing through the roof of the block of flats’ surrounded by black plumes.
Emergency services were called to the scene in the Redwood Grove area of the town after residents reportedly heard a “loud bang” around 9:30 am on Monday 4 June 2022.
A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed firefighters were in attendance “at a major gas explosion on Redwood Grove, Bedford.”
It was later confirmed that firefighters had discovered a body within one if the flats.
Two people are known to have been taken to hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
Firefighters believe a camping stove found in one of the premises may have been the cause of the explosion.
