The 2019 Volkswagen GTI faces stiffer competition than ever, from the new Hyundai Veloster N to the Honda Civic Type R, and from older rivals like the Subaru WRX STI. But none of those competitors can lean on 35 years of experience, and the GTI’s standing as the original hot hatch helps lead it ahead of the pack.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine has been improved for 2019, gaining 8 horsepower for a total of 228, and 258 pound-feet of torque available from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. The VAQ differential helps this front-engined, front-wheel drive hatchback drive like a sophisticated sports car, delivering up to 100% of the available torque to either front wheel.
Inside, the S and new Rabbit Edition trims still arrive with Clark Plaid cloth seats, although leather is available on the higher SE and Autobahn trims. A DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission is also available, although purists will appreciate the GTI’s dimpled golf-ball-style manual shifter. The 6.5-inch color touchscreen grows to 8 inches in SE and Autobahn trims, and all versions feature Bluetooth, Volkswagen’s Car-Net App Connect, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
