What the China-India Border Dispute is Really About?
China and India, the two rising superpowers, have been locked in a complex border dispute along this 2,100-kilometer border for decades.
In 1962, China invaded India and took this slice of Ladakh called Aksai Chin. A remote, high-altitude region currently controlled by China but claimed by India. In 1963, Pakistan gave this region to China to settle border issues and gain a strategic ally against mighty India.
China also claims these parts of Ladakh, himaachahl Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim which are currently controlled by India.
And, in the middle, there are other, smaller, flashpoints too, which are currently controlled by India.
The most serious dispute of all this, arunachal Pradesh, state of India, China's claims that this is part of southern Tibet. Which India rejects. This has to do with McMahon Line, drawn by the British in 1914.
British maps from the 19th and early 20th century show different versions of where the border runs. Because of this, agreeing on a common border is difficult.
