Pope John Paul beatified a nineteenth century Belgian missionary
who died from leprosy at the Basilica of Koekelberg in the Belgian
capital, Brussels, on Sunday (4/6) after a mass. Father Damien de
Veuster lived in quarantine with over 1,000 lepers on a remote
Hawaiian island until he died from the disease in 1889. The Pope
was met by Belgian Prime Minister, Jean-Luc Dehaene, at Nuntiatur
before proceeding to the Basilica. Over 30,000 people attended the
ceremony on the second day of the Pope's visit to Belgium.
