We are very fortunate here in #Greece,
Since #antiquity we have had countless giants who have not been afraid to walk in the footsteps of figures such as #Socrates, #Aristotle and #Plato.
These modern #Titans of #learning continue our people’s #traditions in the #arts, in #literature, #science, and #political thought.
They continue to #teach us, to #inspire us, to deepen and broaden our understanding of these that make our lives richer.
One of our most important #teachers of the past decades was #Sarantos I #Kargakos who passed away in 2019.
Born in 1937 in the sea side town of #Gythieo, just south of #Sparta, his generation’s character was forged in the fires of brutal Nazi invasion of WWII, and the bloody civil war that followed the German defeat.
From his early academic years, he gave many fearless battles, always standing up for what he knew to be just.
Even in the face of the dictatorship that took control of Greece in the late 60s and early 70s, #Kargakos stood his ground, spoke his mind, and stoically paid the price.
A #historian and #philologist, he taught for 35 years in esteemed institutions.
He was the author of over 60 books on Greek and world #history, literature, educational and political matters, and world #travel.
Like a modern day #Homer, he was a mesmerizing story teller. He brought to life stories of ancient #battles, victories and #tragedies. He filled our imaginations with accounts of romances, pirate invasions, conquering armies.
For this talent, he became a very sought after public speaker, and in recent years he blessed us with a fantastic series of lectures on #AncientGreekhistory.
My name is Chris.
I am a #travelspecialist with the #GreekTravelGurus. I plan #tailormadetrips to #Greece.
I’m not a historian or a philologist, but thanks to teachers like #SarantosKargakos, I have a deep appreciation for our history and traditions.
I’ve taken upon myself to translate the #historicallectures into the English language, and I want to share them with you in the form of podcasts.
With your support, I aspire to honor our teacher.
