The I-WEST seminar series hosts thought leaders on a spectrum of topics related to transitioning the Intermountain West to carbon neutrality, including technologies, policy, workforce, and environmental justice.
This seminar features Dr. Derek Vikara of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and Dr. Bailian Chen of Los Alamos National Laboratory. In their presentations, Derek and Bailian provide a high-level overview of how carbon capture, utilization, and storage work, and the potential role CCUS could play in regional energy transition strategies. Derek and Bailian co-authored the “CO2 Storage and Utilization” chapter of the I-WEST assessment report, which is available on the I-WEST website.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, I-WEST is focused on developing a regional technology roadmap to transition six states in the U.S. Intermountain West to a carbon neutral and economically sustainable energy system within the next 15 years. The I-WEST initiative takes a place-based approach, which emphasizes the importance of regional objectives, concerns, and goals regarding energy transition. I-WEST is led by Los Alamos National Laboratory in partnership with regional universities, other national labs, and a non-profit research organization.
