Soundbytes: China's foreign ministry on Thursday (December 26) "urged the Philippines to return to peaceful development," saying Manila's decision to deploy a U.S. medium-range missile system in military exercises would only bring the risks of an arms race to the region. The Philippine defense chief earlier defended its deployment, saying it was "completely legitimate, legal, and beyond reproach" in the context of joint exercises, adding that if China was truly intent on reducing tensions in the region, they should stop their provocative actions and withdraw their illegal presence from the Philippines' EEZ. The land-based "mid-range capability" Typhon missile launcher, developed by US firm Lockheed Martin for the US Army, has a range of 300 miles (480 kilometers), though a longer-range version is in development.
