The dramatic and fascinating story of the Belvedere Palace, in Vienna, one of the more magnificent creations of the Baroque era in Europe. At present it is also an outstanding Art Museum.
This palace was built at the beginning of the 18th century by architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, on behalf of Prince Eugene of Savoy. The Prince was a nearly universal man: outstanding General in the service of the Habsburg House of Austria, close companion of arms of the British Duke of Marlborough, passionate amateur of Arts and Letters, and avid collector of exotic flora and fauna. He was one of the greatest European men of his time.
During its 300 years of history, the Belvedere has lived many moments of greatness, but also suffered very tragic events. It is nowadays, unquestionably, a historic monument and a jewel of Baroque architecture (UNESCO World Heritage), a magnificent park, and a favorite promenade for the Viennese, all at the same time.
BUT it also deserves – very possibly, above all – to be much better known as an Art Museum of the very first quality, with world level collections that span from the Middle Ages to the present time.
This video is presented by Karl Albrecht Hubertus Maria „Kari“ Hohenlohe.
Aside from being a Prince, he is a journalist, essayist, TV moderator, scriptwriter, und editor of the Austrian issue of the Gault–Millau gastronomic guide.
From WIKIPEDIA: Born in Vienna, Karl Hohenlohe belongs to the Austrian line of the princely Hohenlohe family. His father was banker Tassilo (by birth, Prinz zu) Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst (1918–1979); his mother was Antoinette, née Seilern und Aspang (1925–2016).
Many thanks to Martina Winter for her enquiry about this.
