The NHS coronavirus test and trace programme is being launched on Thursday as the UK government moves ahead with easing the lockdown.
Head of coronavirus testing Professor John Newton has said that while social distancing and hygiene measures will still be in place, the test and trace programme adds another layer to further control the spread of the virus.
Anyone over the age of five who has symptoms can now get tested for coronavirus. If they test positive, they will have to self-isolate for seven days. They will then be called by the NHS and asked about their recent movements, to identify anyone outside their household who they might have come into contact with. These individuals will then be called and given advice to self-isolate for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms.
Professor Newton added that the test and trace programme is to identify people who are at risk of developing the infection and to isolate them as soon as possible so they do not spread it to others.
