Despite the plans of Hitler, who agreed to the occupation of Transcarpathia by fascist Hungary, he proclaimed an independent Ukrainian state - Carpathian Ukraine - and became its president. The soviet communist regime couldn’t forgive his patriotism and political activities aimed at obtaining state independence for Ukraine. He was kidnapped by the soviet secret services and sent to Butyrka prison in Moscow, where he was martyred.
But who was this man? How did he manage to remain true to the Ukrainian national idea in foreign isolation?
