Unemployment figures in the last several weeks have caused some concern on financial markets. Several days ago Citigroup announced it will cut around 20,000 jobs (just under 10% of its total global workforce) by the end 2026.
Another symptom of a potential increase in unemployment have been tech layoffs. Amazon, Discord, Duolingo, and Google all started 2024 with job cuts. The job cuts are smaller than those made in late 2022 and 2023, when some of the largest employers in Silicon Valley laid off thousands of workers after years of rapid growth.
