"Peru is home to 28 cetaceans, whales and dolphins of the 32 global species. It is pretty standard for them to be swimming here, although this whale is known to be elusive. It is also in danger of extinction. It is a very particular case for Peru and internationally."

STORYLINE:
Peru's Institute of the Sea was studying a 10-meter-long (32 feet) whale that washed up dead on the beaches of Punta Hermosa, near the Peruvian capital Lima on Friday.
The whale was identified as a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus).
Mariana Orihuela, an activist with the ocean advocacy organization Seaumanoid, highlighted the large number of species that swim in the waters of the Peruvian Sea.
"Peru is home to 28 cetaceans, whales, and dolphins of the 32 global species," said Orihuela.
Locals came to photograph the carcass despite the bad smell it was creating.
