Thenar atrophy may occur in motor neuron disease or MND. In hand, thenar eminence refers to to the fleshy part at the base of thumb. In thenar atrophy, thenar eminence is lost as muscles are wasted due to lesion of median nerve. The first muscle in thenar atrophy to be involved is abductor pollicis brevis.
