We can end up being slaves to our gardens in summer, and just when you’ve got things looking good, it’s time for a little vacation. Here’s how I get my garden ready to manage on it’s own so the gardener can bust out of town for a bit.
A few of the jobs I do:
- Cut back any perennials that are finished blooming. This will lead to a second flush of flowers in some and will neaten up the rest.
- Prune boxwoods.
- Make comfrey fertilizer.
- Fertilize annuals.
- Apply deer spray.
- Stake anything that is in danger of flopping if it puts on more growth.
- Harvest any vegetables that are close to ripe (share with neighbors and friends if they won’t keep until you return).
- Deadhead any flowers that will go over while you’re gone.
- Leave specific instructions for your plant sitters.
- Enjoy your vacation! The garden will manage in your absence.
