Much like in Central America, South America, and the Carribean, the Northern Mariana Islands were "discovered" in 1521 by Spanish explorers. With this came a disregard for countless indigenous populations and an erasure of important cultural perspectives. Although they have been under many different colonial rules since, Spanish influences are still prominent lingustically, architecturally, and musically. This piece is a tribute to the underrepresented Micronesian cultures that have greater ties to our Latinx roots than we realize.
