In this review, we’ll be looking at the Canon 24-70mm f/4L IS USM. This budget-friendly midrange zoom lens is a solid alternative to Canon's better (but heavier, and more expensive) f/2.8L lens.
The Canon 24-70mm f/4L is a nice travel lens, because you can use the wide end of the focal length range for landscape photos, the normal (40-50mm) range for street photography and general use, and the 70mm end for portraits. It also has a macro mode, though you’ll have to get very close to your subject to be able to focus on it.
If you’re using the Canon 24-70mm f/4L lens for travel photography, make sure to take a faster prime lens as well, because the f/4 maximum aperture is sub-par in low light situations.
The “IS” designation in this midrange zoom lens’s name stands for “image stabilization” and the “USM” stands for “ultra-sonic motor.” Canon’s USM lenses have built-in focusing motors for fast focusing, and they are often (but not always) relatively quiet.
