In today's episode of the "Battle for Bikini Bottom" playthrough, we complete the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard, the final level in the game, and return all of Patrick's socks.
Despite being the game's final level (or penultimate, according to the pause menu), with catchy pirate-themed music and a foreboding appearance that sets it apart from all of the other levels, the Flying Dutchman's Graveyard's arguably the most barebones stage in the game. Don't get me wrong; there's plenty to keep you on your toes here- lakes of hazardous goo, numerous bottomless pits, and Chucks and Slicks that are more than ready to blast you away, to name a few- but in terms of the golden spatulas, they're some of the most streamlined in the game.
You see, this level is 100% linear, and as such, nearly every collectable can be found on the path leading up to the Flying Dutchman's ship, with the only exceptions to this being the following: the two golden spatulas in the first area that require you to lower the goo by hitting the hatch with a Cruise Bubble and the first sock, which requires you to backtrack to the first area as Sandy.
Though after dealing with the maze that is the Kelp Forest, it's a breath of fresh air to be given a level in which your only real worry is making it past all of the wall jump platforming sections.
But as much as I love this level in both design and music, I have to say that it has arguably the most disappointing miniboss in the game. I mean, here we have the Flying Dutchman, this all-powerful ghost who can bend reality to his will, yet the boss fight against him consists of him firing a series of easy-to-dodge laser beams, followed by a slow sneeze attack that leaves him vulnerable to damage. Heck, even Prawn's fight is more of a challenge since in that battle, you had limited space to work with, unlike the Flying Dutchman's, in which you're playing as Sandy on a platform the size of Texas. Though as disappointing as the fight against the Flying Dutchman is, after the hell that Kelp Forest puts you through, I view it as a nice victory lap of sorts.
