This is how I perceive the Standards Check. I know! It's an original thought and I'm not repeating the same advice which everyone else gives. I choose to perceive the SC as a demonstration of competence; and I choose to view the SC as a 45 minute lesson with a start, middle and end.
What happens before the 45 minute SC is irrelevant to the ADI examiner no matter how good a job you might have done. And what happens after the 45 minute SC is equally irrelevant in terms of your SC result. The ADI examiner only cares about what happens within those 45 minutes. You have to identify goals and needs at the start of the 45 minutes (the start of the SC lesson), allow the pupil to practice, and then encourage the pupil to reflect (at the end of the SC lesson). This 45 minute SC lesson needs to be planned and structured to allow you to demonstrate the 17 competences. Some ADI's find it mind blowing that I dare to think outside of the box. But I like being an original thinker :)
Everyone is free to perceive the SC however they want to. As with any advice, take it or leave it.
The Standards Check is not a 'normal' lesson, it's an assessment of competence! You have 45 minutes to demonstrate your ability to provide a client-centred driving lesson. You are being assessed against a set of 17 competences; so you must plan and structure the lesson in a way which allows you to demonstrate these 17 competences within the allocated 45 minutes.
