Don’t let the name mislead you. Rocky mountain oysters are definitely not on the seafood menu.
Also known as prairie oysters, rocky mountain oysters are castrated bull testicles. Each spring, ranchers used to castrate their bulls, making the animals less aggressive. The testicles would usually be fed to dogs or thrown away, but the cowboys soon learned that bulls’ balls were packed with protein.
Ancient Romans thought eating animal testicles was a remedy for issues men had in their groins, including erectile dysfunction. In Colorado and Montana, they even host testicle festivals to honor this food, celebrated by some as an aphrodisiac.
The taste has been described as everything from tasting like calamari to “seasoned rubber.” Would you give bull balls a taste?
