Chrystia Freeland, the deputy prime minister and minister of finance, provides an update on the government’s economic plan as MPs return to the House of Commons from their summer break. Freeland announces reforms to mortgage rules that would result in increasing the cap on insured mortgages from $1 million to $1.5 million, and also an expansion of eligibility for 30 year mortgage amortizations to all first-time homebuyers. Responding to questions from reporters, Freeland comments on today’s two federal byelections in the Winnipeg-area riding of Elmwood-Transcona and the Montreal riding of LaSalle-Emard-Verdun.
She is joined at the news conference on Parliament Hill by Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault and Justice Minister Arif Virani.
