"Philosophy and the Impossibility of Wisdom (Socrates, Kant, Husserl)" by Raoni Padui
Is philosophy compatible with the impossibility of wisdom? What happens to the philosophical drive if wisdom is supposed an impossible accomplishment? What kinds of arguments can be given for this presumed impossibility? This paper will investigate these questions by means of an exploration of three different articulations of the problem of the compatibility of philosophy and the impossibility of wisdom. First, I will set up the problem through the figure of Socrates in the Platonic dialogues. Next, I will show how Kant argues for the impossibility of wisdom through his acknowledgment of the infinity contained within human Reason. Finally, I will conclude by showing Husserl's transformation of Kant's notion of infinity. No prior knowledge of these philosophers will be presumed; merely an interest in the questions developed.
