Bentley recently bid farewell to the old Continental GT with the final pure V-8 version, the Edition 8. Merely a week later, the British luxury brand is already previewing its new model, which, at first glance, appears to be a facelifted version of the car originally launched in 2017.
Despite its familiar appearance, Bentley has revealed early images and technical specifications of the "new" Continental GT. As anticipated, the next Continental GT utilizes Bentley's "Ultra Performance Hybrid" system based around a V-8 engine. The combustion engine and electric motor collaborate to produce a combined 771 horsepower and an impressive 738 pound-feet of torque. These output figures surpass those of the W-12 engine mounted in the Batur, which generates 740 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque.
The battery pack, whose specifics remain undisclosed, will provide enough power for 50 miles of range in the WLTP cycle, slightly less under EPA testing. Bentley's most powerful production car ever will feature four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. Additional enhancements include dual-valve dampers, a limited-slip differential, and 48-volt electric anti-roll technology. These upgrades will transform the new Continental GT into the "most dynamically capable Bentley road car in the company's 105-year history."
Performance numbers have not been disclosed yet, but the new model could be even faster than the old Continental GT Speed. The now-discontinued W-12-powered coupe needed three and a half seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour, with a top speed of 208 miles per hour. Production of the twin-turbo 6.0-liter engine is ending with the final examples of the ultra-exclusive Batur. If there is a new Continental GT Speed in the future, it will not feature a twelve-cylinder engine.
Although the weight is unspecified, it is logical to assume it is heavier than the old V-8 model due to the hybrid components. The predecessor weighed nearly 4,800 pounds, so it is not surprising if the new model exceeds 5,000 pounds like the old W-12 did. However, this should not be a major concern, as the Continental GT is designed as a luxurious cruiser rather than a nimble sports car.
The next-generation Continental GT is set to debut in June as a coupe, with the convertible version likely to follow shortly.
