HOW TO USE SOMETHING COMMONPLACE AND DELICIOUS TO CALCULATE THE SPEED OF LIGHT AT HOME USING A MICROWAVE
Speed of light = frequency times wavelength
Frequency is the rate at which an oscillation occurs that makes a wave
A wave looks like a sidewise S, or a wave on a jump rope
It is measured in Hertz or cycles per second
Hertz = cycles/second This can normally be found on the back
or side or back of the microwave. A typical value 2450 mega Herts
which is 2,450,000,000 Hz
To find the wavelength you can use something as delicious as a chocolate bar.
Put it in the microwave on low heat. Spots will melt in it. This is the microwave’s nodes. Measure the distance between the nodes, in this case 6 cm, which is half the wavelength
or 12 centimeters.
Speed of light = 2,450,000,000 Hz x 12 cm measured (6 cm the wavelength is twice the value of the nodes)
This should be close to the speed of light = 29,400,000,000 cm/s
