In this update, Michael S. Calderwood, MD, MPH, Chief Quality Officer at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, discusses our response to the fluctuating dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic.
You asked: Why is the latest shot called a vaccine and not a Covid-19 booster?
Why are we not referring to the new 2023 -024 COVID vaccine as a booster? The reason for this is that we're really changing how we think about this vaccination, shifting to an idea that this is going to be an annual vaccine, something that you get in the fall months leading up to the peaks we typically see from December through February. This is in line with what we do for protection against other viruses similar to flu. So, while we initially thought of COVID-19 vaccination as a primary series and then a series of boosters. Shifting this to be a once annual vaccine is just a recognition of how we need to get protected.
