Hello everyone, and thanks for jumping out on another explore with us.
This one is something quite special.
I am joined by Phil and Ande, and we're in Swanwick, Derbyshire, and we're going back to 1940.
On December 20th 1940 five German prisoners of war escaped from Swanwick POW Camp 13. They had dug a 40 metre tunnel, using spoons, and supported the structure with broken up furniture.
Four of the men were captured almost immediately, but one, a fighter pilot and captain by the name of Franz Von Werre, who was the mastermind of the operation, and had escaped a camp previously in the Lake District, had always planned to go it alone. And so he was gone before the other four had even realised it.
His outlandish plan was to pose as a Dutch RAF pilot by the name of Captain Von Lott, and use that alias, to get him to a local RAF base, and steal a plane, so he could fly himself back to Germany.
We retrace the steps of Franz Von Werre as he attempts to get from the camp in Swanwick, Derbyshire, to RAF Hucknall in Nottinghamshire.
Franz Von Werre became the only German POW to ever escape Britain, and return to Germany.
His story is truly incredible, but more amazing that the tale itself, is the fact that the tunnel he dug almost 84 years ago, is still there, and still visible in the grounds of a busy conference centre in Derbyshire.
I hope you enjoy this tale as much as we do.
Big thanks to Ande for the idea, and to the Hayes Conference Centre for allowing us access to the tunnel.
