Eric Fanning was sworn in as Army secretary on Wednesday in Washington, making him the first openly gay leader of a U.S. military service.
Fanning was sworn in by Defense Secretary Ash Carter during a ceremony in the Secretary of Defense's Dining Room.
"Eric embodies the kind of strong and steady servant leadership and civilian commitment to our men and women in uniform that have made our military the finest fighting force the world has ever known," Carter said.
Fanning served as the Army secretary's principal adviser on management and operation of the service, with a focus on the budget.
He was undersecretary of the Air Force from April 2013 to February 2015, and for half a year was the acting secretary of the Air Force. He also worked on Defense Secretary Ash Carter's transition.
