(19 Mar 2016) Confusion reigned among migrants and refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos on Saturday, the eve of the implementation of the migration agreement reached between the European Union and Turkey.
As part of the deal, migrants on Lesbos and other islands in the east Aegean Sea are to be taken by ferry to the mainland ports of Piraeus and Kavala where they will be placed in shelters and assessed for eligibility for an EU-wide relocation programme.
Those who arrive on the islands from Sunday onward will be screened and their identity recorded and then sent back to Turkey.
But government officials in Greece on Saturday signalled that implementation could only occur gradually, with key details still to be worked out on how migrants newly arriving from Turkey were to be processed and returned.
