Tesla has just brought some great news for would be Tesla Model 3 SR and Model 3 LR owners. Since the beginning of this year, and leading into the return for the LR Model 3, Tesla has stated these 2 trims would only qualify for half of the Tax credit, or $3,750, while the Model 3 P would get the full $7,500.
This was due to the fact that the Model 3 SR gets its battery from CATL in China. So only half of the requirement on the battery is met with this LFP battery. The Model 3 LR just recently became available to order once again and it too now comes with an LFP battery, and has been listed as qualifying for half the EV Tax Credit.
That has all changed as of this evening. Tesla just shocked the industry by certifying the Model 3 SR and Model 3 LR as being compliant for the full $7,500 EV Tax Credit. This major change means that Tesla has somehow shifted their LFP supply chain just enough to achieve the requirements of both Battery Components and Critical Minerals.
It is not clear how Tesla has done this, which makes it very difficult to know exactly how all the details will work. The existing cars in inventory, do these have the same batteries as the new compliant ones? Will the existing cars in inventory only qualify for half the credit?
Until Tesla comes out with some official guidance on these questions, it is not known what happens next. In the meantime, you can contact Tesla or your Delivery Advisor for more details that they may have.
With this shocking news, Tesla now sells all trims of the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 with the full $7,500 EV Tax Credit eligibility. This further pressures the industry already trying to catch up with Tesla as they seem to be quickly becoming the dominant price king in the US.
