Fighting in Aleppo displaces 50K
The Red Cross says that fighting in Aleppo has displaced 50-thousand people. The Syrian regime began an offensive there earlier this month, backed by Russian air strikes. In the UK, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 500 people had been killed in the city, while The Guardian has reported Syria’s near-five-year war has killed 470-thousand people. The Syrian Centre for Policy Research says 11 and a half percent of the population have been killed or injured since the conflict started.
More than 60 killed by suicide bombs
Two girls have carried out a twin suicide bombing attack for Boko Haram. A military and emergency official said more than 60 people were killed on Tuesday at a camp for people displaced by the militant group. Reports of the attack have been delayed because of Boko Haram’s strategy of damaging communication posts. Dikwa camp is about 80 kilometres northeast of Maiduguri, capital of Borno state. Boko Haram began launching anti-government attacks in Nigeria in 2009. It’s killed thousands of people and displaced one and a half million others.
Oregon occupiers to turn themselves in
The four remaining occupiers at a national wildlife refuge say they will turn themselves in on Thursday morning. Cliven Bundy, the father of the jailed occupation leader Ammon Bundy, was arrested in Portland late on Wednesday night. During a confrontation on January 26, federal and local authorities killed a member of the armed militia occupying the reserve. They arrested eight people, including Ammon Bundy. Earlier this month, the militia took over the wildlife refuge in support of two ranchers who are serving extra prison time for arson. The militia wants the land to be handed over to local government.
No growth for Twitter in fourth quarter
Twitter has revealed its fourth quarter was the first time it’s failed to achieve growth since going public. The company’s shares have fallen 50 percent since its founder, Jack Dorsey, returned as CEO last July. The company’s plans to change its format to attract new users have been controversial. Alterations to customise users’ timelines led to the hashtag RIP Twitter trending. And many people have criticised Dorsey’s proposal to remove the platform's 140 character limit.
