The FDA just banned the use of brominated vegetable oil as a food additive.
Brominated vegetable oil has long been used as an emulsifying agent in citrus flavored drinks and sodas like Gatorade, Powerade, and Mountain Dew. It’s still used in Sun Drop and up to 605 other drinks.
BVO can cause iodine deficiency and disrupt thyroid function among other concerns. BVO was first banned by California last year and now will be phased out by August, 2025.
