A corruption scandal has finally claimed the head of Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas, who has handed in his resignation to President Milos Zeman.
He says he will retire from politics, and his centre-right three-party coalition is now scrambling to find a new prime minister to avoid early elections. However in the current climate it is unsure if the replacement would win a parliamentary vote of confidence.
Necas said goodbye to party workers after leaving office, and will serve out his remaining time as a member of parliament.
"I am leaving politics. Now I will be a simple MP and continue my parliamentary work. Sooner or later there will be elections, the latest in May next year, when I will not stand. The president does not want early elections," he said.
