An enthusiastic crowd chanted “Keep going!” along with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she spoke about breaking the glass ceiling Monday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Clinton’s oft-repeated refrain has punctuated her speeches for years.
In support of Vice President Kamala Harris, Clinton recounted the women politicians throughout history who have broken gender barriers, such as Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to run for president, and Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to be nominated for vice president.
“Well my friends, the future is here,” Clinton said. “I wish my mother and Kamala's mother could see us. They would say: ‘Keep going!’” The audience chanted the phrase in response.
During the first day of the convention, delegates formally adopted a party platform. Later in the week, Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will formally accept their nominations as the party’s candidates.
