The XXI century was supposed to be a century of Europe again, as a strong and united entity-like never before. The common currency, historical enlargement of the European Union by the integration of the Eastern Bloc states , and more active presence of the European Union on an international stage , all these have sparkled the imagination of experts and politicians across the world.
Yet the events, which we have observed for the past few years in Europe, caused that uncertainty and disappointment have pushed the optimism and faith in the “better future” out from our minds. Current lack of consensus regarding common strategy on handling the migration flows is only a symptom of deeper divisions concerning fundamental issues forthe future of European integration and the model of life of the Europeans. The significant rise of popularity of populist movements across the continent, as well as conditions of life not suiting the aspirations of the youth, are only further evidence of the scale of the problems, that the EU has to deal with. What kind of future awaits Europeans? Can we withstand crises surrounding us? What is the real cause for present divisions and progressing radicalisation? Are past tensions between the western and the eastern part of the continent coming back?
