How do I give feedback to employees? This video answers a viewer's question (actually, a friend, Tim, who heard about the channel). To give feedback to employees, especially if you're a new leader, you have to do at least 3 things.

1. Set clear expectations and targets. If you set clear expectations, you have a foundation or standard from which to offer the feedback. Without a clear target, either corrective or encouraging feedback will be very difficult and may even confuse the employee.

2. Meet regularly to discuss progress (every 2 weeks). It's much better to meet in a planned cadence so that the employee gets regular feedback on strengths and weaknesses. If you only meet when something goes wrong, people will get a distorted picture.

3. Be as supportive as possible. Ask the employee how they think they're doing and what they need to work on. This gives them a chance to be open and you can then be supportive in helping them improve their performance. Also, make sure your feedback is support as possible about specifics tasks and nonverbally supportive as you deliver your corrective feedback. There's very little reason to communicate in a stern way if you're meeting regularly and can help the person improve.

It's easier because Tim is a new supervisor and can set the tone from day one.
