(18 Feb 2014) Libya marked the third anniversary of the uprising that toppled dictator Moammar Gadhafi on Monday, celebrating into the night across the country.
In Tripoli, a crowd gathered in Martyrs' square, cheering and waving Libyan flags, where they were joined by the UK ambassador to Libya Michael Aron, who congratulated them on their third anniversary.
Libyans lit paper lanterns and launched them into the air with fireworks to mark the occasion.
In Benghazi crowds gathered on the square outside Benghazi Courthouse, now dubbed Freedom Square, the site of the protests that began the 2011 Libyan revolution.
Protests against the government began in Benghazi, Libya's second-largest city, on 17 February 2011.
This led to demonstrations spreading across the country, and eventually long-time leader Moammar Gadhafi and his family were ousted from power.
"Today we all must come out and celebrate," said Ammar Alemami, Benghazi resident, "Because the mothers of the martyrs (those who died in the revolution) must see the Libyan people happy, so they can feel that their sons did not die for nothing and that their sons are the ones responsible for the people's joy."
