STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people marched in the Lebanese capital on Friday to mark the 3rd anniversary of Beirut's deadly port blast with some calling on the international community to help in the investigation.
The anniversary this year comes amid wide anger over lack of progress in the domestic investigation into one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever recorded.
Carrying roses and photos of their loved ones, families of the more than 200 people killed by the blast led the march toward Beirut's port where they gathered outside.
The names of the victims were read and a moment of silence was held at 6:07 p.m. the time when the massive blast occurred.
The third anniversary comes as many have lost faith in the domestic investigation and have started filing cases abroad against companies suspected of bringing the material that exploded on August 4, 2020, killing nearly 220 people, injuring over 6,000 and causing damage worth billions of dollars.
The hundreds of tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate, a material used in fertilizers, had been shipped to Lebanon in 2013 and stored improperly at a port warehouse until they exploded.
The investigation has been stalled since December 2021 due to intervention and pressure by Lebanon's powerful political class in the work of the judiciary.
