Kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHI), which have seen increasing use as a cost-effective technology for gas hydrate prevention in the oil and gas industry, generally consist of polymers that can come out of solution due to high temperature and/or high salinity. This can cause problems both in surface facilities and/or injection wells and mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) regeneration units. Hydrafact has developed a solvent extraction technique for removing KHI polymers from the aqueous phase using solvent extraction with the potential for recovery and reuse of KHIs. This technique solves problems associated with processing or disposal of the produced water, reducing environmental impact and costs.

“Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitors (KHI) are used to prevent gas hydrate formation during petroleum production, which could otherwise cause flow assurance problems and pipeline blockage. Although effective, KHIs are expensive, can cause problems with downstream water processing, and are generally not environmentally friendly.
Hydrafact have developed a technique for KHI removal from produced waters based on solvent extraction using ‘Treatment Chemicals’. Removal of KHIs using this innovative, simple and effective method can simultaneously resolve many of the water processing challenges and provide opportunities for KHI recovery and reuse, ultimately leading to substantial economic and environmental benefits in this industry.”
