STORYLINE:
Doctors treating former Indonesian dictator Suharto said on Monday that he is still having problems with his lungs and digestive system after more than two weeks on life support with multiple organ failure.
Chief presidential doctor Marjo Subiandono told journalists in Jakarta that there were liquids building up in Suharto's lungs because of continuing blood transfusion.
Subiandono also said Suharto was still having problems receiving food orally.
Meanwhile, Suharto had begun moving his hands and speaking in a whisper in what doctors called a "miraculous" recovery.
Suharto, 86, was hospitalised on January 4 with severe kidney, lung and heart trouble and was put on a dialysis machine and a ventilator.
His condition deteriorated rapidly a week ago when he developed a potentially fatal blood infection and pneumonia.
Preparations had begun for a state funeral, the family mausoleum was put in order and passes were handed out to the media for a memorial service after his heart briefly stopped.
Suharto led a regime widely regarded as one of the 20th century's most brutal and corrupt for 32 years until he was toppled in May 1998 amid massive pro-democracy street protests.
Suharto's current hospital stay - one of several in recent years following strokes and intestinal bleeding - stirred fresh debate about the role of justice in an impoverished country with a notoriously corrupt judiciary.
A few victims and students have demonstrated for him to stand trial, but the political elite has led popular calls for forgiveness.
