Hi, I’m Katie, a D.C. resident and author of the website HotelsNearDCMetro.com
In this video will discuss how the Metro can help tourists visiting Washington, D.C. for the first time.
The Metro system is expansive and connects the entire greater region including the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia to downtown D.C. and the National Mall.
The Metro is best utilized to move long distances in order to avoid D.C. traffic, especially during rush hour.
The metro is not necessarily the best for moving short distances, so check out the D.C. Circulator bus route for getting around the National Mall and downtown Washington D.C. over using the Metro.
As for purchasing fare cards.
It's best that each person has their own SmartCard when using the Metro, and generally speaking the best deal is to simply load the SmartCard with the amount of money your trip requires.
Utilize the trip planner on the Metro’s website to estimate the costs ahead of time.
Families should note that children under the age of five are free to ride the Metro.
One thing tourists often assume is that the Metro runs 24/7. It doesn’t, so if you're planning to be out past midnight don’t plan to rely on the Metro in order to get back to your hotel.
The biggest advantages the Metro gives tourists is being able to find an affordable place to stay outside of Washington, D.C.
You can save hundreds of dollars on hotels by staying in some of the great neighborhoods in Maryland and Virginia.
One of the most important Metro stations for tourists is the Smithsonian, which is near the Air and Space Museum on the National Mall.
Another important station is Woodley Park on the red line, near the National Zoo. Also, note that stations on the yellow line will connect directly with DCA, Reagan National airport.
For now, tourists arriving at Dulles will need to utilize the Silver Line Connector shuttle, or take the 5a express bus route to D.C.
It's common to commute on the Metro from the stations in Arlington to downtown, or the national National Mall.
Depending on the station this will take 15 to 20 minutes.
Getting from Alexandria to the National Mall and downtown will take about 20 to 30 minutes.
And getting from Bethesda Maryland to downtown D.C. near the National Mall at Metro center will take about 35 minutes.
The Metro connects with Amtrak at four stations including Union Station downtown, King Street at Alexandria, the Rockville station north of D.C. in Maryland, and the New Carrollton station east of D.C. toward BWI.
