Amber&Silk project
China has always fascinated me. Their rich culture and art shrouded in a mist of mystery, that have lasted for several thousand years. I first visited 'The Middle Kingdom' in 1995, in order to learn
to play a two-stringed instrument - the er-hu. I have been visiting there frequently for the past 15 years. I especially love the southern provinces, full of plantations of delicious tea and magical sounds.
Chinese music has always inspired me. It is a base for music from many Asian countries, starting from Turkestan to as far as Japan and the islands of Indonesia. Some elements of ancient Chinese music, despite having disappeared in China itself, have been preserved in countries such as Japan, Korea and Vietnam. One of the oldest Chinese stringed instruments is the gu-zheng zither. Its sound blends wonderfully with the timbre of bowed instruments. For years have I been combining the sounds
of stringed instruments of different cultures. It's an intriguing journey into the unknown. I created my first Polish-Chinese projects in 1997-2002 during a five-year stay in Japan, where I befriended Chinese musicians living there. The contact with the sound of Chinese instruments became
so inspiring that I began composing my own pieces for reconstructed Old Polish knee fiddles and Chinese zithers. Having wandered for years through this wonderful, vast country, I realized the extraordinary diversity and colorfulness of its culture. I dreamed of getting to something that could be called the spirit of Chinese music. Turning off intellect in order to feel its flavor and depth. One day, while staying in the Fujian province, I asked an an aged artist: ”How to understand the spirit
of your music?”. ”Watch Chinese calligraphy and painting and you will recognize it”, he replied.
Amber&Silk project is a meeting of two distant musical cultures of the world. A journey
of imagination in which a meeting takes place on the distant Silk Road between wandering musicians from China and Polish troubadours. Together they sing, together they play and together they learn from each other a different way of thinking about the formation of emotions or the flow of time
in music.
The programme includes traditional Chinese and Polish songs, as well as my compositions kept
in the 'World music' style, dedicated to unusual string instruments - the Biłgoraj suka, the Płock fiddle, the guzheng and the zheng xiaomeng.
