The 2022 Kia Sorento PHEV has finally arrived and joins its strictly gas fed and gasoline-electric hybrid Sorento siblings in Kia's model line. Given the current global push toward EVs, the Sorento plug-in hybrid, with its targeted 32 miles of electric driving range, looks to be a good starting point for customers ready to embrace electrification but are a little wary of fully committing to a pure battery electric vehicle.
The Kia Sorento PHEV comes with a 1.6-liter turbo-four coupled with an electric motor, which is fed electricity by way of a 13.8-kWh battery. The two power sources generate a system total of 261 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Kia estimates its three-row plug-in hybrid will achieve 79 mpge combined and travel a projected overall 460 miles with a full tank and battery pack.
The six-passenger Sorento PHEV will be available in two trims: SX and SXP. The midsize SUV features seating surfaces finished in synthetic leather, and as indicated by the passenger capacity, it gets captain's chairs in the second row as standard.
As for tech features, standard equipment includes a 10.3-inch touchscreen, a wireless charging pad, a proximity key, and a Bose sound system. The SXP trim grade adds a 2.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and a blind-view monitor that activates when signaling left or right.
