Ah, Split Mushroom. A stage with some pretty amazing music and has a strange level design at some points. But it's still an overall fun stage...
Except for those freakin' stairway segments!
Okay, okay...I'll slow down there. This stage isn't too terribly difficult, and Split himself isn't hard to handle. This stage is all about looking ahead and acting before your fingers can even react. If you have a keen outlook for what's ahead (and with the help of enemy placement memorization), getting to the boss room is a smooth route. But then, of course...you've got road blocks.
Area 1: The stairway segment here isn't as bad as the second half, but with the fast pace you're expected to travel up these stairs, enemies will surprise you with their placement. Especially the flying mechaniloids. If you don't kill the closest one to you immediately, he'll immediately shoot you in the face. But there are another set of flying....bug-like enemies following after, and they will blindside the heck out of you. Ryuenjin is love here. The rest of Area 1 though...eh. Just take your time in the segment after the stairway. Those bug enemies will punish you for speed running here.
Area 2: Only thing I'll talk about here is the...second stairway segment/the hardest part of the stage. One enemy type here to mention: SPIKE WHEEL OF SPEEDY DEATH. Yes, that's my new name for them. Yes, the caps are part of the name. Not only do they spawn on the screen quickly, but they hurl at you unexpectedly quick too. This was quite literally the worst place to put these things. Even if you know they're coming, it takes some serious reflex to destroy them before they touch you. Not to mention you'll eventually be pressured by a shield enemy behind you to pick up the pace. Honestly...your best bet is to hope your Z-Saber strikes are accurate enough to kill any of them that come towards you. Shippuuga will only get you hit easier here. It's doable though, I just didn't risk it.
Boss Analysis: Split, like I said above, isn't much of a challenge. Granted, I could have let him do his spin attack with his doppelganger, but that attack is easy to dodge as well with proper spacing and wall jumping. I just aimed to finish the fight as quickly as possible. However, I didn't abuse the weakness here and just showed it off once. This is more of a "watch and see" battle, so I'll leave it at that.
Overall Stage Difficulty: 4/10, only due to SPIKE WHEEL OF SPEEDY DEATH.
And here's the next useful skill in Zero's Arsenal: Kuuenbu...or Kuuenzan (Tempest?!). Another one of Zero's versatile moves, and it replaces Zero's default aerial slash. While a pity to lose a bit of range, the omni-directional spin is much more useful overall (and shrekts mini-bosses). it gives Zero's all new ways of approaching an enemy without fear of taking damage, but he can still take damage, so you've still gotta be careful regardless. You'll be seeing me use this A LOT.
Also, we get Double Jump.
