How to restore a cast iron frying pan. Buy cheap from auction and restore!
Using metal utensils on non stick pan, skillet will scratch it and over time they appear to be ruined. Why throw away a high quality pan just because of the coating. With a bit of DIY it can be re purposed. Here we restore a Le Creuset frying pan.

The secret is to remove the old Teflon down to the cast iron pan. Either use a grinder and sand paper or take the piece to a machine shop and have it sandblasted.
The restored raw cast iron, then needs to be seasoned immediately.
What You Need
Steel wool
Dish soap
Scrubbing brush, scouring pad, or sponge
Dish towel or paper towels
Vegetable oil (or cooking oil of choice)
Aluminum foil
Oven
Remove all the old teflon then use fine steel wool to remove rust from affected areas. Scour the skillet until the area returns to raw cast iron.
Instructions
Remove all the dirt rust and debris with fine steel wool from affected areas. Scour the pan until the area returns to raw cast iron.
Wash the skillet thoroughly with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a bristle brush and gentle scouring pad or mesh sponge if needed.
Thoroughly dry the skillet with a clean dish towel or paper towels.
Apply a small amount of vegetable oil (or oil of choice) to the entire pan. Use only a small amount to avoid a sticky surface.
Place the pan in the oven upside down on the top rack of your oven or on the burner. Place a sheet of aluminum foil or a foil-lined baking sheet on the bottom rack to catch any oil drips. Heat the cast iron for one hour at 350°F.
Let the pan cool before using.
