In Bosnia and Herzegovina, microfinance had a major impact helping people rebuild their lives after war. The industry has also faced challenges in the country, including rising levels of borrower overindebtedness. IFC and others have helped tackle such challenges and support the sustainable development of the industry helping build businesses, revive the economy, and rebuild lives.
IFC Advisory Services in Europe and Central Asia works with a number of microfinance institutions across the region helping them transform into deposit-taking organizations and strengthen and expand their businesses, with policy-makers and industry bodies to improve the regulatory environment for microfinance, and with the microfinance industry to introduce responsible lending practices. IFC's work in the region is supported by Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Development Bank of Austria, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.
