There are many cultures in South East Asia which employ gongs that had been spread eons ago by Chinese traders. Each culture has its own way of using the gongs. In Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, the kulintang gongs are played by the whole community, male and female, young and old. They are used for community interaction and celebration.
