Estonia's Justice Minister Liisa Pakosta called for an update to centuries-old international maritime law to outlaw the damage of undersea infrastructure such as cables and pipelines. This call follows recent damage to undersea cables connecting Estonia to Finland, including a power outage and damaged internet lines. Finnish authorities seized a Russian oil-carrying ship suspected of causing the damage. Estonia plans to petition the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by February to update maritime law, seeking clearer regulations to prevent disputes over underwater damage and minimize international legal conflicts.
