Translation :
A noble Lady in rustic mantle,
With milk-white hands and breasts,
With her treasure of tears
She sows pearls in the Etruscan sea.
Where ancient Astura rises,
Her pain was so great
That her face seemed not that of
A woman, but like rock in the sea.
Sometimes, in her suffering,
One saw on her white skin
Her golden locks
Drying the silver rivulets of tears,
And from lips that ensnare
Came bitter notes.
She resembled a siren
That languished in the middle of the sea.
"O you cruel and pitiless shores"
She cried.
" If the heavens hate me
Why don't the heavens take me?
I put my faith in winds and waves
To flee a chain of treachery,
But there sailed from some unknown shore
A ship more dangerous than the sea.
A ship like a wicked predator,
Its sails flapping in the calm wind
Drifting on the peaceful sea,
Bringing war to other ships.
The dawn was just breaking in the sky
Rising to pour forth flowers
And, with its scarlet veil,
To disclose the first light,
When the wicked pirate suddenly turned
To attack my little boat.
And here harsh fate
Has cast me away, exhausted.
" I would rather have died when I was born
Than become a captive" I said to myself.
And, then the waters
Washed me ashore.
Where can I go? What should I do,
Cast away on this lonely shore,
Prey to a thousand beasts?
Surely the biggest beast
Can't give me more pain than I already have in my breast?
But what is life to one,
Who weeps, who begs for help,
Who is miserable and abandoned?"
So she lamented, and after a while
The heavens, not wanting to
Remain without a sun,
Arranged it so that a noble hero, in purple cloak,
Suddenly showed up
To console the beauty
There on the shore.
She held her breath,
Because the pain had sewn her lips shut.
Finally a smile,
Escaped with a flash and
Adorned her mouth.
The rocks, the winds and the waves fell in love.
And when tears ceased flowing down her face, she said
" To be far from the waters is a very pleasing fate."
