If the officer comes back after searching your car and has found nothing, he may in fact simply let you go. This is a circumstance where you don't want to give him a hard time. You are now free to go about your business and that is exactly what you should do. Take your license when he gives that to you, go to your car, turn your blinker on merge into traffic and leave the area.
Do not harass the officer by saying things like "Why did you do this? You know I couldn't be a bad guy?" Don't do that. If however something is found, he is allowed to come back and display it to you and ask your comments - Say nothing and remember, they record conversations in the car.
