Electric vehicles (EVs) are fast overtaking the consumer market in Hong Kong as the city strives to become a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. Phasing out gas-guzzling cars, also known as ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles, is an important component of that plan. But while the ambition is there, Hong Kong lags behind mainland China and many developed countries when it comes to charging station availability. EV owners say that the cost of charging their vehicles is noticeably lower than it is for running petrol cars, but at present, the high-speed facilities for charging EVs are mostly found in shopping malls. Meanwhile, the government has pledged to install about 200,000 charging stations by 2027.
